Beth Rivkah 2009

“Holocaust Mural”

Prep – Y6
This project is in the memory of one and a half million children who perished in the Holocaust.
In the tree are the names and ages of children who lost their lives as well as the yellow Star Of David that all Jews were required to wear. The tree has roots coming from the ground that weave up to a new generation of children. One child is holding the flag of Israel and above this are the words written in Hebrew “The people of Israel shall live.” Three doves are also depicted, their colours changing from dark to colour to white (peace). The sun is in the sky depicting that the sun shines again and a butterfly is flying- in the desolation of the concentration camps where butterflies did not fly then. Residents from Emmy Monash assisted the students in creating over 300 hundred leaves and made individual ceramic pieces.
